| Fred and Gloria Jones have traveled extensively throughout Baja for many years. They have driven their camper from one end of the peninsula to the other innumerable times, explored off-highway in a four-wheel drive truck, cruised both coasts in their boat, hiked and ridden horseback in remote mountain terrain, and scrutinized it all from the air. They have slept out in the open on the ground and in tents, truck campers, and boats. They have camped in the highest mountains and the deepest canyons, on beaches on Sea of Cortéz islands and along both coasts, and at campgrounds across the region.
Explorers, scuba divers, big-game fishermen, and naturalists, the couple has a deep and abiding interest in the history, archaeology, people, and culture of Baja California. Both have been active in the Commission of the Californias, a former coordinating body between the governments of California, Baja California Norte, and Baja California Sur, contributing their expertise on tourism and natural resources.
The Joneses currently manage a nonprofit travel club with 14,000-plus members that has specialized in Baja travel for more than 30 yearsVaga-bundos del Mar. Fred is vice president and general manager, and Gloria is on the board of directors. He has had substantial experience managing campgrounds as director of the California Department of Parks and Recreation, which is responsible for the state park system. Gloria shared that experience as assistant to the director.
Between them, these award-winning freelance writers and photographers have coauthored two books besides this one (A Climber's Guide to the High Sierra and The Desert BighornIts Life History, Ecology and Management); contributed to a compilation of hair-raising experiences in the book No S, There I Was; served as field editors for Western Boatman Magazine and conservation editors for Baja Explorer Magazine, authored numerous professional publications on wildlife, natural resources, parks, and recreation; and contributed many outdoor features and columns to newspapers and national and regional magazines. Fred is a member of the Outdoor Writers Associations of America and California and is a past president of the latter organization.
